getting out of your own way

Last week i went to visit a friend. i'd just finished a run and needed to stretch, so I lay on her living room floor and rolled around on my back, trying to loosen up.

my friend asked me, "how's your book?"

"great," I said without thinking. i was folded over my hamstrings, which always need attention. "i just signed six copies for a special order. I'm giving a talk next week, and I've been invited to the durango literary festival."

she looked at me with an odd, vacant expression, as though she was trying to figure something out.

I realized she didn't mean my book Brief Flashings. She meant the book I am [purportedly] working on now.

How to Disappear! It hadn't even crossed my mind she was talking about my new book! How long has it been since I last opened the document? A week or two? Sure, I've been traveling. But also, I've been stalling, procrastinating, avoiding, hemming + hawing.

100% getting in my own way.
