When I was in Italy last week, a new friend asked me how to develop your writing voice. We were rooming together on a poetry and walking trip led by the poet David Whyte in Tuscany. She had spent the last year traveling throughout Europe on what she was calling her Gap Year.
That made me smile. Wouldn’t it be great if we could all take a gap year during times of transition? Think of what we’d learn about ourselves and the world! It would save us so much floundering later on!
I asked if she was writing about her experiences, and she said yes, and that’s when she brought up voice. How do you find yours, and how do you know when you have?
